ISLAMABAD — A Saudi Arabian diplomat was killed on Monday in the volatile southern port city of Karachi, police officials said. It was the second attack against Saudis in Karachi, considered the country’s financial and commercial hub, in a week.

The diplomat, identified as Hassan M. al-Kahtani, was shot by gunmen riding two motorcycles who intercepted his vehicle after he left his residence in an upscale neighborhood, , according to the officials. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

“He was shot in the head and died on the spot,” said a police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The diplomat was driving the vehicle himself at the time of the attack.

Police officials said they are investigating the motives of the killing. Last Wednesday, unidentified assailants threw firecrackers at the Saudi Consulate but there were no injuries.

“It is too early to determine the motive. The investigation will cover all angles...whether it is related to the killing of Osama bin Laden or unrest in the Gulf,” a police official said.

There was suspicion that militants linked to Al Qaeda, which opposes the Saudi as well as the Pakistani governments, might be behind the attacks.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have traditionally been close allies and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the political party that controls Karachi, a city riven by political and sectarian unrest, described the killing as an attempt to destabilize the relations between the two countries.

“We condemn this attack. No one who carries out this kind of attack can be a Muslim,” the Saudi ambassador, Abdul Aziz al-Ghadeer was quoted by Reuters as saying. “We trust the Pakistani authorities and hope they will identify the terrorists and bring them to justice,” he said.
