ATHENS — Greek commandos boarded and turned back a Canadian boat bound for the Gaza Strip on Monday, in the latest setback for the all-but-stymied Gaza flotilla. The Hellenic Coast Guard stopped the boat, the Tahrir, or Liberation, about 20 minutes after it set sail from the island of Crete, organizers said, and impounded it at a military dock. Aboard were 43 activists hailing from Canada, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and Turkey, said Sandra Ruch, a coordinator for the boat.

On Friday, Greek authorities turned back an American boat that had set sail from a port near Athens. Earlier that day, the government issued a directive prohibiting all vessels from departing Greek ports for the “maritime area of Gaza.”

Flotilla organizers insist the decree came at the behest of the Israeli government. Greek officials say the order was intended simply to ensure the safety of passengers aboard ships sailing from Greece. But Israel has thanked foreign nations for their assistance in preventing the departure of the flotilla, which is meant to contest the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza

. Last year, Israeli commandos killed eight Turks and an American-Turkish youth aboard a ship sailing in an earlier Gaza-bound flotilla, prompting international outcry and the easing of Israel’s overland blockade.
